Apostrophe
For plural nouns that don’t already end in s, add an apostrophe and an s to the end of the word. For nouns that already end in s, just add an apostrophe.
- The people’s opinions varied.
- Many businesses’ success relies on how they treat customers.
- Your business’ success relies on how you treat your customers.
- Big data’s influence on your business’ bottom line.
Colon
In a sentence, capitalize the first word after the colon if what follows the colon could function alone as a complete sentence. Use a single space following the colon.
- This is it: the chance we’ve been waiting for!
- This is it: We’ll never have to work again!
Comma
At Truckstop we use the Oxford comma, also referred to as the serial comma. This means that in a series consisting of three or more elements, separate the elements with commas. When a conjunction comes before the last element in a series, include a comma before the conjunction.
Truckstop provides solutions for freight carriers, brokers, and shippers.
Hyphen
A hyphen is used to connect a range of numbers such as dates, scores, pages, and so on.
From 1995-2020, freight carriers have relied on the Truckstop Load Board.
It is also used to construct a compound adjective of more than one word.
Truckstop started in small-town rural Idaho.
Em dash
Use an em dash to set apart entire phrases from the main body of a sentence when a pause for effect is desired. Think of an em dash as a comma on steroids when used in this way. Do not put spacing around either side of an em dash.
